To design a completely new digital production system in a time of rapid technological change and volatile markets, Arri used the methods that have already resulted in over 90 years of successful products. Arri examined their experience with the D-21, analyzed customer feedback and discussed future applications with prominent industry figures while always keeping in mind the needs of our customers in today’s digital productions. At the same time Arri's research and development team consulted with leading sensor designers and developed the ARRI Imaging Technology (AIT) that is at the heart of the new system. The result is a comprehensive new 35 format digital camera system with prices and features designed to address a wide variety of digital productions from television commericials to anamorphic feature films.
While the two entry models utilize a 16:9 sensor area and a new, advanced electronic viewfinder to make them lightweight and affordable, Arri Alexa's top of the line camera uses the full 4:3 area of the sensor and as many features of ARRI’s 35mm film camera systems as possible. This includes, of course, an optical viewfinder and a rotating mirror shutter (Alexa A-OV Plus). The familiar ARRI product quality, as well as compatibility with the extensive range of film style lenses and accessories, ensure that crews worldwide will be able to quickly adapt to these new tools.

| It is common practice during color grading to use ‘power windows’ to get the most out of the captured images. The incredible exposure latitude of the ALEV III sensor prototype provides an enormous amount of information even in the darkest parts of the image, where other cameras just see black. This translates into more creative choice during post-production, as well as the ability to “fix” underexposed images to a greater extend than previously possible. |
